i like this picture because of two reasons. 1, it raises a moral question of should people help and prevent a person from killing his/herself? why would “we” waste our energy and heart to save that woman who has made up her mind on life and death? wouldn’t she have thought deeply enough before committing suicide? wouldn’t she have done the cost/benefit analysis in her head pre-suicide? or are human beings just compassionate social animals? do we all carry and live with that softhearted side in us? are “we” as much responsible for her near-death scene?
2, i like the contrast between the people and the buildings in the background. the buildings in the scene represent the high-speed economic urbanization development taking place in China. the people appear to be of working class men and women, certainly don’t appear to be that of bourgeoise class. maybe the woman couldn’t pay off her loan, or that she got fired that day from the factory, or that her husband has just lost a job, or that she has no money to pay for her son’s hospital billings, or that her whole family is being evicted by the city government for property development… whatever the reason it may be, the environment must have triggered something to make her do such extreme thing. money makes all the decisions in “this” life and the only decision that she can choose in her own life is death. but even “that” choice is being taken away.
